Quote for the Day

Noah Webster (1758 – 1843) was an American lexicographer, textbook pioneer, English-language spelling reformer, political writer, editor, and prolific author. He has been called the "Father of American Scholarship and Education" and his name has become synonymous with "dictionary" in the United States, especially the modern Merriam-Webster dictionary that was first published in 1828 as An American Dictionary of the English Language.

In about 1810 Webster was - or was supposed to be - at work on the dictionary which bears his name when his wife unexpectedly entered his study and found him in the arms of their housemaid.

“Noah, I'm surprised!” Mrs. Webster exclaimed.

Webster coolly responded, “No, my dear. You are amazed. It is we who are surprised.”
