December Days

So now it’s December and the countdown to Christmas begins.

Some December trivia:

December comes from Latin word decem (meaning ten) because it was originally the tenth month of the year in the Roman calendar, which began in March. The winter days following December were not included as part of any month. Later, the months of January and February were created out of the monthless period and added to the beginning of the calendar, but December retained its name.

The Latin name is derived from Decima, the middle Goddess of the Three Fates who personifies the present.

December contains the winter solstice in the Northern Hemisphere, the day with the fewest daylight hours, and the summer solstice in the Southern Hemisphere, the day with the most daylight hours.

In the Northern hemisphere, the beginning of the astronomical winter is traditionally 21 December or the date of the solstice.

In Australia each of the seasons comprise three full months. Each season begins on the first day of the calendar month, so summer is from December 1 to the end of February, autumn from March to May, winter from June to August, and spring from September to November.J

Hence, to those in Oz, welcome to summer.
